If you have ever been to a pig roast in the summertime then surely you remember how impressive it was to see the whole hog slowly turning over the fire, and how wonderful the aroma and taste was. Hog roasts are very popular and for good reason. Your guests will surely be amazed and their taste buds will be offered a sensation not soon forgotten. The party will surely be a feast for the senses and an occasion long remembered by all in attendance.
One of the best things about a pig roast is that you can invite up to 100 friends and family and still have plenty of meat to go around. A good sized roast pig feeds a lot of hungry people so be sure not to exclude anyone from the guest list! Roasted pork is crispy on the outside and juicy and succulent on the inside. Perfect for family or class reunions, company get-togethers and neighbourhood gatherings, a pig roast is fun to host and quite easy to manage if you give yourself time to make all of the necessary arrangements.
You can purchase a pig suitable for roasting by contacting a local butcher. Be sure to order the pig a couple of weeks prior to the event to be sure that it is ready. Tell the butcher how many people will be attending the event so that he can recommend the correct size pig. The butcher will prepare the animal for roasting so all you have to do is go and pick it up on the morning of the party. In the meantime you will have to set up the outside cooking area.
Assuming that you have an adequate rotisserie, you need to build a fire pit. A good fire pit can be built from bricks placed on the ground. Choose an area of the yard that you don't mind becoming charred and be sure it is free from bushes and undergrowth. You need to just build up the sides a bit around the area, fill it with charcoal and you are all set. Some people choose to dig a shallow pit in the ground and then stack a few bricks around the area to enclose it. This is up to you. The main point is to be sure that the pit will contain the fire and heat.
Keep in mind that you do not want the pig to come into direct contact with the fire, which will result in the skin burning quite quickly. Be sure that the rotisserie is placed high enough away from the heat source to keep the pig out of the direct flames. It is going to take many hours for a medium to large sized pig to cook all the way through, so be sure you have given yourself sufficient time. Roast pig meat should not be overcooked so be sure not to leave the pig over the fire for any longer than need be. Once done cooking, it is time to share with your friends who are eagerly waiting for the meal to be served!
For those that think all of this is far too much work, considering purchasing a roast pig from online caterers. There are many companies available to choose from and they are definitely the experts when it comes to cooking meat like this.
