A Cheap, Easy, and Unusual Place to Buy Some Grocery & Produce Staples

Dec 21st, 2011 John Szymanski

Do you routinely use apples, oranges, bananas, potatoes, onions? I sure do in my house... A great place to buy these staples is certain local gas stations (chains, Kwik Trip is one in the Midwest). Often these items are cheaper than your local grocer. You must stop and buy gas anyway, you might as well pick up some produce staples.

I find $0.39/# usually for the bananas and onions. Apples, orange and pears are often 3/$1. And they are BIG, nice apples, many weighing a half pound for just ONE. So, 3/$1 means about $0.70/#. Pretty reasonable produce prices. And onions. (You can not be in our family if you do not love onions!) Grocery store onions are way high priced, in my book: $2.50 for a 3# bag is not uncommon to see. The gas station has them (nice big hard yellow ones) for $0.39/#. That is about HALF of the grocery store price!

Not to mention that ONE large apple will probably pretty well satisfy your appetite for a while, and is healthy! Compare that to a $1 candy bar or $1 tiny bag of chips... neither of those are good for you and will not keep you full very long!) Some people believe eating well, eating lost of fruits and veggies is expensive. Well, it IS, if you buy fresh raspberries and blueberries, out of season asparagus and so on. But if you buy what is in season, and use hints like I just shared with you, eating produce is very reasonable, dollar-wise. And the nutrient value is very high. A boxed quick snack type meal is expensive and highly processed. An apple or banana will keep well in your car and is easy to eat (even oranges, just keep a box of wet wipes handy).

So, check out your local gas stations the next time you buy gas and see if you can find a GREAT DEAL on some produce there! And looking for more bargains? There is a a website which has the BEST place to find more usable information in locating great deals, both on the internet and in real life.

Saving money will make that hard earned dollar go farther and last longer. Which will help you to provide better for yourself and your family. And having more money (through your savvy savings) gives you FREEDOM. Freedom allows you to do more of WHAT you want, WHEN you want, and HOW you want.
