The Pittsburgh Steelers are a professional football team that is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and have been in existence since 1933. Originally known as the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team changed their name to the Steelers before the 1940 season. The team was founded by Art Rooney, and ownership of the football team has remained in the Rooney family ever since. Current ownership of the team is held by Art Rooney's son, Dan Rooney who has also given his son some share of team ownership as well. The Steelers are part of the North division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL).
The team plays their home games at Heinz Field on the north side of Pittsburgh, which was built in 2001 to replace the Three Rivers Stadium complex that hosted the team for thirty one seasons. Team colors are black and gold, and the team symbol is based on the Steelmark symbol that has been in the Steel industry around Pittsburgh for quite some time.
The team is the oldest franchise in the AFC and has won more Super Bowl titles, AFC championship games, and hosted more championship games than any other team. The team's road to success has been long and during the beginning years, the Steelers did not perform well. World War II saw player shortages and the team had to merge for a few years with the Philadelphia Eagles and then later with the Chicago Cardinals to keep competing.
Only with the hiring of Chuck Noll in 1969 did the team's luck change for the better. Noll helped to draft players like Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Mel Blount, Jack Ham, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, and Mike Webster. Noll's draft choices helped the Steelers to go on to win four Superbowls in six short years.
Bill Cowher took over for Chuck Noll as head coach in 1992 and helped to lead the team to the playoffs in his first six seasons as head coach. Under his leadership, the team also made an appearance in Superbowl XXX, but lost to the Cowboys in 1995. Ten years later, the team won Superbowl XL against the Seattle Seahawks in 2005 and became the third team to win five Superbowls. Cowher left the team in 2007 and the Pittsburgh Steelers hired Mike Tomlin as their head coach. Tomlin took the position as the first African American to coach the team in its long seventy five year history. He became the third coach of the team to go to the Superbowl and was named the Motorola Coach of the Year in 2008 when the team beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in the Superbowl.
