With the souring of the economy, the number of laid off people in the USA has increased considerably. According to some estimates, close to 15 million Americans are out of work.

If you're one of those unfortunate person whose job was on the chopping block in spire of acquiring and polishing your skills through out your career, don't panic. You can use those skills you have accumulated in your earlier jobs or acquire some new skills to march ahead. Here are some ideas you may consider to improve your financial situations or get a new job.

If you have skills in information technology, web development, or software programming, there are still plenty of jobs available. Look for freelancing jobs in eLance, RentACoder and other IT and Web related freelancing job sites.

Search for jobs in large cities like Washington DC, New York, Baltimore, Chicago, etc. Large cities have more jobs than small towns. You must be willing to relocate if the pay is good or temporarily relocate yourself to pay your current mortgage and bills.

Start your own online business. Be creative and create a tool that has a sizeable market demand and paying subscribers. Start your own eCommerce store. Learn pay per click (PPC) advertisement to drive instant traffic to your web sites.

If you can afford, hire a career coach. Professional career coaches will help you in a variety of ways. They will set a clear vision and goal achievement strategy for you. They will tell you what skills, attitudes, and resources you need to achieve your goals. They will layout a specific plan for you and set the milestones that you must achieve to succeed.

If you need to acquire some new skills, you can go back to school. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or popularly known as the Stimulus Package, provides four billion dollars for workforce training and development.

You can find out if you're eligible for any training money by going to your local One-Stop Career Center, the Federal Government's network of more than 3,000 employment help offices.

Trained processionals in these career centers will advice you how to transfer your existing skills in a depressed industry to new skills for the new economy. If you need training to transfer your skills, they will give you all the details of available training and financial help.

Use Web 2.0 tools like LinkedIn to network with people in your industry. If you're financially sound for a few months, take up some voluntary assignments to prove skills. Polish your resume and post it in all those large job sites like Monster, CareerBuilder.

Even if you have financial stability for few months without a job, getting laid off is psychologically devastating. It can depress you but the key is to have more confidence in your ability to succeed in improving your financial situation by any means and executing a plan to achieve your goals.
